Before
Site visit: confirm service size, meter location, and utility
Note existing amperage, overhead vs underground, meter/panel combo vs separate, and which utility serves the address.

Load calculation
NEC 220 load calc for the new service size. Most cities want it with the application.

Check utility requirements
Meter socket spec, clearances, whether the utility needs a work order or an inspection release before reconnect.

Permit
Pull the permit
Apply on the city portal or at the counter with the load calc and a simple one-line or site sketch if required.

Schedule the utility disconnect / reconnect
Lead times vary from same-day to two weeks. Book it as soon as the permit is issued.

Order the panel, meter socket, and grounding materials

Work
Do the work: disconnect, replace panel, bond and ground, label circuits

Inspection
Call for the electrical inspection
Most cities release the meter to the utility only after the inspection passes.

Closeout
Utility reconnect and meter set

Close out the permit and file the paperwork
Save the inspection card / final approval with the job file.
